Manakish (also pronounced as Manaeesh) is also known as a pizza or flatbread made with a soft dough. It can be made into small circular rounds or larger ones depending on preference.

Mostly topped with various toppings to make delicious bread and the most preferred ingredients are Za’atar and local cheese or ground meat.


Its origin comes from the ancient Phoenicia (2500 BC – 539 BC, an ancient civilization that originated in the Levant region of the eastern Mediterranean) . In that age, people would make stone wheels and crush wheat into flour in order to produce bread. The dough was traditionally prepared by local women and were baked in the morning in the communal oven.

Name Origins:

The word manaqish is the plural of the Arabic word manqūshah (from the root verb naqasha ‘to sculpt, carve out’ or engrave).

Meaning that after the dough has been rolled flat, it is pressed by the fingertips to create little dips for the topping.
